History of THETA XI OMEGA CHAPTER

Theta Xi Omega Chapter’s presence in our communities has been consistent through our ongoing implementation of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s programs of service indicative of the targets and initiatives of each international administration

Our Story

The Story of Theta Xi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated   of LaGrange, Georgia began in 1955. AKAs living in LaGrange and surrounding areas began to discuss among themselves and were determined to charter a chapter based in LaGrange. All of the ladies were teachers and some were fresh out of college. They held a series of meetings, the first at the home of Eloise Moore Ransom. Unfortunately, the group’s first attempt to organize a chapter was in vain.

A decade later in the spring of 1965, Audrey Carswell led the charge once again to form an interest group to charter a chapter, and this time to fruition.

Persistence and dedication in the form of regular meetings eventually paid off. Two years later on a warm evening on March 11, 1967, Theta XI Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was established in a chartering ceremony at the Union Street Library in LaGrange, GA. Seventeen AKAs were present at the ceremony with South Atlantic Regional Director, Odessa Nelson presiding. Included were Fannie Davenport, Ophelia Ray, Vivian Fitzhugh, Alyce Ringer Fowlks, Ida F. T. Jones, Bernice Pearson, Lois Debnam, Juanita Byrd, Queen Hardeman, Eloise Ransom., Bettye Boyd, Sumonia Miller, Alice Ogletree, Catherine Banks, Annie Clowers, Mabel Mitchell and Jarvis Shepherd. South Atlantic Regional Director, Odessa Nelson conducted the chartering ceremony.

For over 57 years, Theta Xi Omega Chapter has been a stable chapter in West Georgia with members from Troup and the surrounding counties of Coweta, Harris, and Meriwether; as well as the Atlanta area. From our chartering in 1967 to the present day we have worked diligently to uphold the high ideals and principles of our great sisterhood. Theta Xi Omega Chapter’s presence in our communities has been consistent through our ongoing implementation of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s programs of service indicative of the targets and initiatives of each international administration. Our strongest emphasis has been working with our youth. From Emerging Young Leaders, to ASCEND to #CAPS program, to our present initiative, our Youth Leadership Institute we work diligently to instill in them the importance of being leaders, lifelong learners, character building, and a plan for pre-college admissions. We are also proud of the exposure we have given them to the HBCU experience.  In 2019 we celebrated 30 years of hosting our Cotillion Ball. Our young ladies and young men and their parents have been allowed to enjoy a wonderful social event as a gift to our community. Other areas of emphasis have been health, the arts, economic literacy and development, and global impact. Each year our chapter has awarded scholarships to students in our service areas. During the past international administration, we awarded scholarships to students attending Historically Black Colleges in Georgia and Alabama.

We are currently sixty -nine members strong under the leadership of our President, Dr. Lorraine Taylor Jackson. Past Presidents presently active with our chapter are Kathy Ellison, June Nelson, Benita Epps, and Anita Williams.

Theta Xi Omega’s history fits all the pieces of our “Vision Fair”. Our history tells our story which symbolizes our legacy and our sustainability through our legacy of sisterhood and service.

As we celebrate our 57th Chapter Anniversary, we have already launched our commitment to Soaring to Greater Heights of Service and Sisterhood.
